HistoryUTmidterm Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

HistoryUTmidterm - Essay Example The Triangle of fire has a good deal of historical significance. It led to the transformation of the labor system of New York State. It also led to the fire safety measures adoption that represented the whole country. The New York Factory Investigative Commission participated actively in this transformation. It also wrote the thirty- six different bills that related to labor which the state legislature adopted in the long run. There was also adoption of security measures and monitoring of the conditions in the factories which the unions and the local government agencies did and people use them to date.Wilson Woodrow used fourteen points to make known the idea of a League of Nations. There was a change of the League of Nations to the United Nations. Wilson considered it necessary for the world to unite in order to establish guidelines and to make sure the world was safe. He found it easy using the military to aid in enforcing the people’s decisions. Nonetheless, the League of N ations was not a success, after the Second World War, there was a change of the League of Nations to United Nations with a goal to maintain peace globally and assist in financial problems. This has to some point been successful but not totally. It has changed America to being a world wide country. Jacob Coxey was a well-known political figure. He was also an advocate for labor-rights in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. When he arrived in Washington, he stipulated the centralized government without delay help workers by employing them to work on community projects, for example, roads and buildings that belonged to the government. Coxey also ran for the Populist Party candidate for Ohio governor in 1895 and 1897. In 1895, he got fifty-two thousand votes; however, as the economy improved Coxey's strength diminished. In 1897, he got less than seven thousand votes but still did not give up in politics. Addams became one of the most esteemed and well- known individua ls in the state. This is because she played crucial roles in a number of ongoing campaigns. Addams also played a role as a social outcast which inspired her in writing articles. She was a founding personality in Women the American Civil Liberties Union, American Civil Liberties Union National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People and International League for Peace and Freedom. She was so popular such that when Theodore Roosevelt wanted the presidential appointment of the Progressive Party in 1912. Theodore asked her to second the appointment, and this was a record in history her being the first woman to have participated in this. Addams also wrote books on peace and war in her public career from 1914 till her death. In the last years of her life, she spent less time at Hull-House much of her time working for world peace and to end racism. She died of cancer on May 21, 1935 and left an impressive academic legacy that is yet to be fully discovered. PART TWO Question two G ermany declared the use of sub-marine war on 9th of January, 1917. The main cause of America joining the war was to have a key impact on the First World War. Another reason that might have made America take part in the war was because Wilson Woodrow supposed that if Germany won the First World War then it would be outrageous world wide, and this motivated them was to join the war on the Allied side so as to prevent them from winning. Additionally, the U.S decided to join the war because their sea men were murdered and their trading ships were sunk. Despite their being neutral, this affected their economy considerably and they joined the war on the allied side just to help win the war quickly. An additional reason was because Germany had sent the Telegram for the Zimmerman to the government of Mexico. This is because they had promised significant assistance in recuperating territory lost to USA in the war that involved the Americans and Mexicans amid 1846-1848

Managing across Cultures ( My sis ) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Managing across Cultures ( My sis ) - Essay Example Models of Cultural Dimension Hofstede Model Geert Hofstede cultural dimension theory was introduced in 1993. While working in international business it becomes essential to understand the different cultures of the people and based on this various decision can be taken. In this theory different management concept and practices in different countries has been evaluated by analysing five dimensions of culture. Power Distance: It is the extent to which inequality between the powers of the people of a country is distributed. High power distance based cultures are generally hierarchical in nature in which everybody is placed. Low power distance culture implies equalisation of power and wants justification of power inequalities when it occurs. France and India are examples of countries that are high in power distance. The Netherlands is a country that is low in power distance. ... It has been found that men are considered violent and competitive, whereas women are supposed to be gentle and are concerned with home and family. Uncertainty Avoidance: It defines the point at which a value of the culture is predictable in nature and whether the people assume new ideas as risky or challenge. Hofstede finds that people who prefer to avoid uncertainty believe in the rules that are made to be followed. They should be with the organisation for a lifetime and for this uncertainty level there is stressful life. Japan is an example of a country that is high in uncertainty avoidance. India and the US are examples of countries that are low in uncertainty avoidance. Long-Term Orientation versus Short-Term Orientation: It is the cultural attribute that focuses on whether people is focussed on long term benefit such as saving money for the future or on the short term basis that like abide by the various social responsibility and traditions (Changing Minds, 2011). Source: (Desig ned for Africa, 2010). While working overseas in different countries with different people, at first their national culture with these dimensions is to be evaluated. Hofstede’s theory demonstrates that with one or more of the dimension all the countries are different in certain way or the other from each other. Trompenaars Model Trompenaars is a Dutch culturalist who has introduced international culture. In this model major dimension of person versus task and centralised versus decentralised have been determined. The various cultural dimension of this model are: Universalism vs. Particularism: The high universalism culture stress on formal rules and contracts to their individual

Critical review of Prahalad, C. K. and Hamel, G. (1990) The Core Essay

Critical review of Prahalad, C. K. and Hamel, G. (1990) The Core Competence of the Corporation in Harvard Business Review, May-June - Essay Example They have dwelt on the role of core competence in the consolidation of business and their discussion of the topic has been on a very high level of consolidating the deeper roots of the tree that a corporation can be compared. If roots are strong, competitive advantage is always in reach (Ward & Rivani 2005). As there are different schools of strategic thought and leadership like the Great Man theory of leadership (Bodega 2004)), Prahalad and Hamel (2005) have analysed the leadership issue in detail through the means of consolidating the core competencies to lead not only through SBUs but overall exchange of competencies internally to avail all possible benefits from it. The article) provides knowledge of the strategic positioning of business from a heightened platform and perspective of how corporations should manage their business functions through core competency (Ward & Rivani 2005). The larger perspective of any industry requires P5F MODEL employing suitable tools like SWOT and PEST, then comes the time to strategise. Out of the choicest divisions of schools of thoughts on strategy building, the most comprehensive strategy has been presented by Whittington based on four approaches being Deterministic or Emergent, Single goal or Pluralistic, Strategy style and Influences. Examining the work of Prahalad and Hamel (2005), from Whittington’s model one can easily categorise it to the period of 1990s influencing the global economics with embedded strategy style, both single or plural and deterministic as well as emergent. What Prahalad and Hamel have said can be both compared and contrasted with what Whittington’s (2005) four approaches on strategy development are. The article stresses on both core competencies and core products in collaboration with alliance partners. Contrast seems to be in the deeper understanding

Factors impacting todays health care Personal Statement

Factors impacting todays health care - Personal Statement Example It is directly proportional to the CMS regulations of the Federal and state government. This affects the healthcare system because these individuals also tend not to get the preventive care needed to stay healthy. When they come into a medical facility and are sick , sometimes that acuity is increased because of the lack of preventative care. Staff reduction and nursing shortage simply add fuel to the fire as they are the backbone of the healthcare. Amidst this turbulent healthcare system there is some significance that has mushroomed. The Ehealth, expensive prescription drugs, dearth of Nurses have all accounted to a rickety health care environment. But the million dollar question is "Are people ignorant about healthcare insurance"' The answer is some people sacrifice their heatlh for materialistic fancy goods ignoring the fact "Health is wealth". The hospitals are also struggling to balance the disparity between the young and old nurses. But the system needs reformation as people c astigate the government for not managing the economy and government retaliates by increasing the taxes. This is probably not a solution for having better healthcare environment.

LEGAL ENVIRONMENT 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

LEGAL ENVIRONMENT 3 - Essay Example The pharmaceutical industry in the developed countries is one such industry which has recently been condemned as relentless in the protection of its rights to the extent of infringing on ethical principles and humanity. This has been the major theme of Cooper, Zimmerman and McGinleys report in the Wall Street Journal (2001). The arguments presented therein shall be discussed in the following sections. In Cooper, Zimmerman and McGinleys article (2001) the authors have presented issues related to the controversial legal and ethical debates surrounding pharmaceutical companies of the developed nations. The main arguments are that pharmaceutical companies charge exorbitant prices for their products even in poor countries which cannot afford to buy their medicines. This is especially true in the case of African countries where the major AIDS population depends on imported medicine for curing the disease. No doubt, the stance that the pharmaceutical companies had taken justify their business position nevertheless, one needs to also understand that corporate philanthropy is not limited to charity and donations. It extends to corporate social responsibility as well. Ethically, pharmaceutical companies need to consider the human side of business as well; especially when the majority of their consumers are patients belonging to poor and under developed countries. According to Boateng (2001 ) the Big Pharmas are not the inventors of lifesaving drugs. In fact research indicates that the majority of the drugs researched in the United States and in other developed countries have been public-funded projects which have been entrusted to the private sector pharmaceutical companies for manufacturing and distribution. The campaign against Africa and its generic drug importation is clearly a monopolistic approach to business practice and should be discouraged. Similarly, pharmaceutical companies across the world are pressuring world

Religious Message Of Steve Jobs Biography Essay

Religious Message Of Steve Jobs Biography - Essay Example This is particularly apparent in the transition that Jobs faced when he was ousted from his own company Apple but carried on to be a founder of Pixar, and took big steps in terms of opening up and being vulnerable to the presence of others in his life, for example, accepting his daughter Lisa. This message present and demonstrated through the idea of redemption because Jobs provides a second chance to many others in his life, and is also given a second chance to improve relationships with people, before he finds out that he has been diagnosed with cancer. Steve Jobs was a great man. The reason why I have chosen Steve Jobs as the reference to this article in terms of underlying a religious message is because Steve Jobs propogated through his practices and his speeches, the importance of doing what we love, the importance of connecting the dots in terms of following the gut feeling, ands lastly the importance to live tastefully. This paper will underline the moral story with respect to living life in the way we believe and without listening to other’s opinions. Steve Jobs also believed in doing great things, and this will be an added part of the moral story which will be discussed in this paper. Each and every paragraph has detailed instances from Steve Jobs’ life and will demonstrate the religious and moral message throuugh the examples from his life. When Steve Jobs was a budding entreprenuer, he often labelled himself as an artist. He ofent remarked that he saw himself as an artist, and also mentioned the fact that every beautiful thing in this world was conceptualised to be an art, and we were mere propogators of art. This leaves a very strong message of religious morality that in life, we should see beauty in every way possible, and should not discard any object in order to negate its beauty. At times, we embark on things and find ourselves craving for our notion of beauty and aesthetics, however, according to the experience of Jobs, it is very crucial to understand the aspect of beauty in every form it is in present to us. Jobs beileved that the present is a gift which has been given to us by God, and that we hsould live in the present and try to make it better without having the regret of making mistakes in the past, along with living without the mountain of guilt surrounding our negative feelings of the past. The best way to live without it is to defeat the mountain, negate the bad feelings and look forwards from a fresh perspective in life. Another aspect from Steve Jobs’ life which can be mentioned here to demonstrate the moral message sent by him was when he had ust started the company called Apple. He laid the foundation of Apple on a note which is quoted below: â€Å"We are going to change the status quo, we are the pirates, we have come to refute the nacissm of the giant IBM† The aboe mentioned quote sent shockwaves to the computing world. No one before had the courage to challenge the might of IBM. At that time, the morality of Steve Jobs was governed by the belief that everthing is supposed to change, change is the only constant, and the old should be changed with the new to bring a fresh perspective in life. With this idea and philosphy, Steve Jobs challenged the might of the IBM. The moral of the story is that one should not confine to the same things for ever and ever, as there is a potential to change. The might of the old and big will come down if the services they provide do not land up in the right context. It is unhealthy to live without competition, and with

Computer Liquid Cooling Systems and CPU FANS Essay

Computer Liquid Cooling Systems and CPU FANS - Essay Example However, for larger equipment and setups the liquid cooling technology is still used owing to the sheer volume of heat that it can handle along with the scientific properties of water as heat conductor. The paper then sheds light on the brief history and usage of this technique. This technique has its roots in 1982, but started gaining popularity in 2000. High performance and high power consuming systems are the ones that are mostly suited for this type of cooling technology as they are the ones that generate voluminous heat. It is a common fallacy to think that only the CPU is cooled by such liquid systems- a wide range of components including the bridges, memory, hard disk drive and others also benefit from these cooling systems. In the final course of this paper, the advantages along with the disadvantages of these systems are considered in the light of the more popular, air cooling systems. This technology offers unique advantages in terms of higher capacity to tolerate heat leve ls, ability to transmit heat from the source to another point over larger distances which makes high performance possible without overheating. The downside, however, is that these systems are costly, primarily due to the cost of installation and technical expertise of professionals that deal with this system. The paper finally concludes with recommendations pertaining to the use of these systems along with their likely application in future. Computer cooling is a process whereby heat that is produced as waste by various components of the computer is removed or ‘cooled down’ in order to maintain the working temperature confines of the computer (Morley & Parker, 2009). This is extremely essential for certain components to function properly that may otherwise become permanently disabled owing to overheating. Components such as these include, but are not limited to, circuits such as hard disks, graphic cards and the CPU (Morley & Parker, 2009). The CPU is often equipped wit h a cooling fan on top to ensure the temperature remains regulated and the components do not become out of order due to overheating. Computer cooling systems are often designed in sync with robust design of computer components such that these components produce as little heat as possible. In such cases, the components are manufactured in a way that they consume as little power as possible, because the greater the power they consume, the higher the heat levels generated. â€Å"Heatsinks† are often used for this purpose such that they do not contain a fan; however, they have a mechanism whereby cooling is done through control of airflow which reduced the heating impact or temperature boost owing to a certain increase in heating of components (Miller, Vandome, & McBrewster, 2009). By systematically controlling the flow of air the establishment of hotspots is averted. Computer fans, which are often used in sync with these heatsinks, provide the invaluable function of reducing the intensity of heat generated by various computer components (Morley & Parker, 2009). Another, unusual and uncommon technique is the use of liquid cooling mechanisms or water cooling to regulate the temperature of the computer in line with the normal operating standards (Zelkowitz, 2009). Water cooling has been traditionally employed in cooling of power plants and industrial machinery (Zelkowitz, 2009). Since water is a good conductor of heat, the heat from
